Girls State Citizen Press Release

Parents

Dear Parents/ Guardian of an Iowa Girls State citizen,

The Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Board strives to provide a leadership program designed to increase awareness and knowledge of the Iowa governmental processes in a mystical state from the district level, to the county and then to the state level. We do this while teaching the young women about their duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Each participant will be given the opportunity to “sprout” her own wings and do things that she sometimes has no idea that she can do. She may just learn that she can win and at times she will lose, all the while she will survive.   Government does not have to be dirty but fair and fun while accomplishing a task. This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity that only happens to selected girls between their Junior and Senior year of high school.

All Girl State Citizens learn to live in a community setting, sharing a dorm room and meeting several peers all the while enjoying life at it finest.  Your daughter has a chance to form friendships that could possibly last a lifetime and interact with students from different parts of the state. When your daughter leaves Girls State, she will tell you about her experiences but unless you were one of the former citizens, you will not understand how she has grown and changed.  As time goes on, you will get a better understanding of her experiences and know why and how Girl State made a positive effect on her life.

Thank you so much for (considering to allow) allowing your daughter to participate in this experience. Thank you, also for supporting the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program.
